Bhutia Busty monastery or Karmaa Dorjee Chyoling monastery is a Buddhist monastery located in Bhutia Busty, Darjeeling, India. It belongs to the Red Sect of Buddhist Lamas.
History
Originally a branch of the Nyingma sect’s Phodang Monastery in Sikkim, it was transferred to Darjeeling in 1879. The original location was on the Observatory Hill. The monastic practice was violently interrupted around 1788, when Nepali troops overran the land, destroyed the monastery and converted Dotsug into a place of worship dedicated to Mahakala. The foreign troops were driven out by the British East India Company during the Gurkha-War and the territory was returned to the Chogyal of Sikkim in 1817. In the 1860s the monastery was relocated to its present location in Bhutia Busty. However, the monastery in the new location was also destroyed by an earthquake in 1934. The Chogyal of Sikkim helped rebuild it. The monastery has a collection of old Buddhist scripts. One of the original pieces of the “Book of Dead” is its prized possession. The monastery has been built in olden Tibetan style and has a Sikkim influence to it. It brings forth the Buddhism culture in Darjeeling which is very vibrant. The monastery belongs to the Red Sects of Buddhists. The main prayer room inside the monastery building has a model of Buddha in a glass case and photos of His Holiness, The Dalai Lama.
This Monastery contains a huge library, which has many Tibetan and Buddhist books. From this book we can refer the Tibetan life and culture. ‘The Tibetan Book of the Dead’, the original copy of this book is in the library. It is used for travellers to refer it.
The most important assert of this monastery is its library. This contains the large number of books, Which have many stories that tell about the culture and tradition of the place. A beautiful arts are placed inside this ministry, this shows the beautiful historic Characters or atmosphere.
