Located in the shadow of Mount Tiger hill, the highest peak of the India’s first protected wildlife sanctuary Senchel- Rangaroon, a developing countryside Tourist destination is now ready to welcome all visitors. A ‘sunken’ village is called Rangaroon in Lepcha dialect and available folk stories also signify the literal meaning to this. Legend, Mount Tendung which is visible from Rangaroon was the only resort when entire foothills of Darjeeling and Sikkim were under the water of river Rungyeet flood. The festival Tendunng Lho Rum Phat which is observed annually in Sikkim pays its homage to this life saving mountain. The altitude of Rangaroon is 2 thousand meter high from sea level and the approximate distance is 16 kilometer from Darjeeling town. Rangaroon can be reached crossing 4 km long downhill drive passing through emerald Senchel forest after Darjeeling, Ghoom, Jorebunglow and 3rd mile Bazaar. Interestingly, Rangaroon used to be the renowned Tourist destination initially. Magnificent view of the third highest snow peak Mt. Kanchenzonga and serene picturesque all around, it was Rangaron which possesses the glorious history of first Botanic garden in Darjeeling hills. The homeland of the Himalayan Flora & fauna, Rangroon Forest Dakbungalow was also the first place to offer overnight stay for every visitors. The oldest Tourist Guide book named ‘The Concise History of Darjeeling District since 1835’ has been defined it as the idle place for nature lover or to the picnickers. Rangaroon also considered a veritable paradise for adventure seekers. It the legendary Mountaineer Tenzing Norgey Sherpa, who either brought Rangaroon into limelight by setting up world famous Rangaroon trek for the trainees soon after the first mountaineering institute HMI in India.

Tea plantation & Tea factory: The Chinese tea species and the hydraulic powered plants machinery tools are the prime attraction of visiting Rangaroon. Though the century old tow storied hydraulic Tea manufacturing factory built by German native Fedrick Von Frostmaan has stopped functioning for so many years but one can still observe how water source was being used as prime support for art of tea producing.
Due to its location right below 8 thousand feet Tiger hill, the moist full climate here considered conducive for yearlong tea leave shoot harvesting.
River Rungdung:
River Rungdung or Dahria is located below the village tea garden. It is nearly 40 minutes walk to reach river side where the uncompleted project of water pumping for Darjeeling town can be seen. It’s a place for locals to come to celebrate different occasions and enjoy picnics.
The Observatory cave:
Visiting Rangroon won’t be interesting without seeing the Observatory cave. It’s a holy place for villagers as well as the outsiders. Its is believed the rock cave is abode of Goddess Durga. Every year people here offer perform special worship to seek good fortune and blessings.
Bird watching is also an activity that can be done here. With varieties of Himalayan birds, Rangaroon will attract the bird watchers.
Homestays and Trekkers huts are available for accommodation in rangaroon. Trekkers hut in rangaroon is run by explorer group of rangaroon.
It is about 16 km from Darjeeling town. From Siliguri, drive till Jorebungalow (60 Km from Siliguri) and then take a turn to reach the 3rd mile. From 3rd mile, there is a route downhill to Rangaroon. Rangaroon is about 8 km from Jorebungalow.
