Makaibari tea estate is one of the oldest and the very first to establish a factory in the region, located in the beautiful Kurseong valley of Darjeeling. Makaibari a family owned estate is one of the oldest tea garden in Darjeeling dating back to the year 1859. Makaibari, where makai=maize, bari=land means the land of maize in local language. It is located in the sloppy hills of Kurseong, about less than a kilometer from the town at an altitude of 1500 meters above the sea level. The estate covers six ridges and plantation takes place in 120 hectares out of a total of 670 hectares.

If you are staying at Makaibari, you can pursue several activities including a guided tour of the tea gardens, watching the garden workers plucking teas (depending on the season) and talking to them, how tea is processed in the factory from drying to packaging, tea tasting session etc. You can also be a part of a Bird Watching tour and experience wildlife.
Makaibari Tea Estate offers limited accommodations to tourists. The Stone House is a heritage building of the colonial days run by tea estate. The locals in Tea Garden also run Home Stays. In 2005, some villagers and tea garden workers of Makaibari decided to offer part of their own homes to accommodate tourists and visitors. There are around 24 families who have renovated or extended their homes nicely and offer rooms to tourists in form of home stays. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The rates are very reasonable and includes homemade breakfast and two full meals. Most of the homestay owners are good cooks and prepare Nepali food very well.
Makaibari tea estate is around 1 and a half hour from the main town of Darjeeling, which can be covered by on a jeep ride. In order to reach the hill station of Darjeeling, one can make use of various alternatives, which are mentioned as below:
By Air: Nearest airport to Darjeeling town and to the tea estate is Bagdogra airport in West Bengal.Bagdogra connects the important cities of India like Kolkata, Guwahati and Delhi. From the airport, one can easily hire a taxi or cab to make it to the hill station.
By Rail: If you are planning to travel by rail, then make it to point totravel till New Jalpaiguri as it is the nearest to the hill station. The station very well connects the important cities of India like Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and Kochi.
By Road: The region of Darjeeling is accessible by road journeys as well. Cities like Kalimpong (51 km away) and Gangtok (100 km away) are well connected to Darjeeling via roads.
