  • Description

    Often referred to as the garden of happy hearts, Tumsong Tea Estate is nestled in the surreal landscape of the Golden Valley of Darjeeling. Tumsong was planted some 5,000 feet above sea level in 1867 around a temple dedicated to the Hindu goddess named Tamsa Devi, whom the indigenous people of the Golden Valley worshipped. The garden faces the regal peaks of the Himalayan range, including Kanchenjunga, the tallest highest mountain in India and at 28,169 feet, it is also the third highest in the world. The tea estate is surrounded by the gorgeous Himalayan Mountains and you get magnificent view of the Kanchenjunga from here. The rolling deep green tea plantation is laid on an open hill slope that has an altitude varying between 5,500 ft to 2,700 ft.

  • Places to Visit
    There are several activities organized by the retreat at additional cost. Four wheel jeeps and guides are provided wherever required. Here are some of them:
    • A walk through the garden
    • Factory visit and watching the tea processing
    • A local cultural dance program around a bon fire in the evening
    • Camping and picnic by the river side
    • Day excursions to nearby villages and Darjeeling town.
  • Accommodation

    Tea estate themselves run a retreat hotel in their tea garden named Tumsong tea retreat. Advance booking of rooms is necessary due to limited number of rooms.

    Few homestays have also started in nearby locations.

  • How to Reach
    • By Train : Take a train up to NJP (New Jalpaiguri). Tumsong is only 93km from NJP. You will get ample taxis and shared jeeps from NJP to reach Darjeeling in about 3 hours. You will also get plenty of shared jeeps, taxis and buses at Siliguri (takes about 3 hours to Darjeeling).
    • By Air : Fly down to the nearest airport Bagdogra which is 94 km from Darjeeling town and take a private taxi. Shared taxis and buses are not available at Bagdogra. It takes little over 3 hours to reach Tumsong Tea estate, Darjeeling from Bagdogra airport.
    • By Road : Plenty of shared jeeps and taxis available from siliguri to darjeeling, it takes about 3 hrs.
